The “Deffner Society” Will Awaken

Dr. Donald Deffner was one of my seminary professors when I attended Concordia Theological Seminary in the early 90s. He was a great prof. My favorite class with him was on evangelizing the intellectual. Deffner was all about striking up conversations with thoughtful people by engaging them via popular books and other media. He was called to the Church Triumphant in 1997. Here’s a piece about him [pdf].
Shortly after his death, I and some compadres started the Donald Deffner Literary Society. We had several excellent sessions discussing The Great Gatsby,The Aenied
and others.
I think the time has come for us to resurrect the group in a new form. Behold The Deffner Society, a group that will meet periodically to discuss books, to be sure, but also other media such as film, television and music. Another difference is that the new format will eventually present opportunities for people to share, if they wish, original creative works.
Our first meeting will occur after Easter week. The time, date and location will be announced. Our first presentation will consider Watchmen, the graphic novel identified by Time magazine as one of the top 100 American novels.

As one of the original members of the Donald Deffner Society, I am thrilled to hear of its reawakening! I look forward to hearing more about it.
