It’s just a silly picture I found somewhere. It refers to the emperor in Star Wars who says that line and zaps people. I certainly do not intend to compare Pope Benedict to an evil emperor. So forgive me if this is bad taste. I just thought it was cute.
I saw a Far Side comic once with God sitting at his PC. He’s watching someone walk on a sidewalk under a piano being lifted with a rope. God has his finger poised to press a button on his keyboard which says “Smite” on it. I don’t mean to belittle God or divine judgment. It just gave me a chuckle.
I just had to laugh. Anyone familiar with Star Wars would know it was a joke. (Although I could see how someone could take it the wrong way…) I think it is all the more appropriate given the Pope’s lecture he has been so roundly criticized was on faith and rational thought, and how religious violence is counter to God. That made this quite funny, for me anyway.
On a vaguely-related note, it’s worth pointing out that among some young Lutherans, there’s a slogan: “Sith aren’t the only ones who deal in absolutes–Dare to be Lutheran.” There’s a pic of Martin the monk doing the same sort of lightning action as this picture shows. It’s a laugh, and in this case it’s just a commentary that not all people who believe in absolutes are as evil in their convictions as Hollywood, and the rest of the world, would have us believe.
Ooooohhh… Now that I understand it, I’d like to post it myself. But then I might have to go through the same tedious process of explaining it that you’ve gotten stuck doing!
I’ve honestly been so busy getting into my new job that I have barely seen or read the news. I was only vaguely aware of the controversy. Had I been a bit more informed, I’m sure I would have held on to the picture.
As Dr. Luther might say: “What does
this mean?”

I’m scratching my head a bit over this one, too.

I thought you were referring to the Islamic “outrage” last week.
