Singer Isaac Hayes Quits South Park
I’ve never watched the popular South Park cartoons but I am familiar with them. Well known singer and outspoken Scientologist, Isaac Hayes, supplies the voice for the chef character for the animated show.
Now I’ve read that he is quitting the show because it spoofed his faith, Scientology. That’s fine. I don’t blame him for that. But when he said the following, I coughed out my coffee:
“There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins….”
Oh come on! This show is famous for goofing on Jesus and Christianity all the time. I guess it’s only intolerance and bigotry toward his own faith system that is bad.
And let’s be honest, of all the world’s religions which one is just begging to be made fun of? The ones founded by Abraham, Moses and Jesus Christ or . . . L. Ron Hubbard?

At least there are no embassy burnings and beheadings taking place as a result of these cartoon satires.

Andrew makes an excellent point. There is only one world religion whose followers characteristically respond to criticism with murder.

We should be very, very clear, Matt Stone and Trey Parker are not the friends of Christians. That being said, thier social commentary is dead on. This is even more true when they they make fun of the hypocrisy of most Christian groups.
Their episode on Mormons was a laugh riot. They actually told the story of Joseph Smith and the origin of Mormonism as the Mormon’s tell it and let that be their humor. What were the LDS’ers to do, deny their own teaching and doctrine.
I find it odd that Isaac Hayes is just now finding out that the show he works on is offensive.
As a friend of mine has said “Mr. Hayes needs to pray to… um, let’s see, who exactly do they pray to? Anyway, whoever those nuts pray to, Mr. Hayes needs to put in his own petition for that gift of self-deprecation. One we Christians have had to cultivate for centuries…”

Re: Andrew’s comment: Isn’t this world religion a “noble” religion? That’s how our President has described it. I wonder what version of the Quran he reads, the NIV (New Inclusive Version), where everyone can interpret it in his/her own way?

Evidently, intolerance and bigotry begin when someone satirizes his religion, while your’s and mine are fair game.
