Which Witch is Which?
Last year, I recall reading about a school district in Washington state which was banning the celebration of Halloween. If you think this was done to appease some Christian fundies, you’d be wrong. The fact is, the decision was made because Halloween depictions of witches were offensive to . . . witches. The Wiccans complained. This year, the same thing is happening in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Oh man that is just too funny. No matter what somebody is always offended by something. I don’t know if you watch much South Park, but this makes me think of the episode where the parents complained about the Christmas play so they made this awful expressionistic piece of junk in hopes that nobody would be offended and everybody hated it. No matter what, somebody gets trampled on. You can’t please everyone.

Well I am a Wiccan and the popular commercialised depiction of witches at Hallowe’en does offend me, but I accept that the chances of getting it replaced by a serious celebration of Samhain (the Celtic festival of the dead, i.e. ancestors) or indeed All Saints and All Souls, the Christian equivalent, are practically non-existent.
It does annoy me, though, when every Hallowe’en, without fail, Christian ministers here in the UK come out with their anti-Pagan opinions because they think that the commercial version of Hallowe’en is the same as the festival that Pagans celebrate.
But wouldn’t it be nice if we replaced the commercial version of Hallowe’en with a celebration of the beginning of winter and honouring of our ancestors?
